Opinion Piece : The realities of establishing a new medical school

So far so good. But the elephant in the room, rate-limiting step in New Zealand is having enough clinical placements – the opportunity for all senior students (medical, nursing, physio etc) to work supervised one-on-one alongside experienced clinicians in multiple areas, seeing many patients and being involved in their clinical care.

No amount of high/low fidelity simulation, AI-generated cases, AI-diagnostic algorithms (all already in use) can replace this learning; the art of connecting with different people with diverse needs on their terms to develop trusting, beneficial doctor-patient, tākuta-whānau relationships is primarily learned on the job.‍

My hope is that we don’t rush to dismiss indigenous knowledge, and the very real, tangible support it can offer in helping us interpret our world, by mere virtue of its indigeneity.
