Nau mai haere mai - Welcome
About
Te Ara Paerangi Community is a place for people interested in research, advocacy, and capability building across the Aotearoa New Zealand research sector. It was started as a way to collaborate and contribute to the reform of the research system (see history below). As that process moved on, it became less amenable to public interaction. At the same time, the university funding crisis worsened resulting in redundancies and loss of whole fields of study.
We responded to a suggestion to re-launch the site with a focus on connecting and providing tools for people interested in research, advocacy and capability building. We welcome anyone to join in and participate as they like. Keeping up to date on the news around the research sector is one important way to be involved. Some might have a specific project or campaign for change. They can start a space to do that. Others may want to make blog like posts to share their thoughts and expertise.
Get started by requesting an invitation and go from there. Make a profile. Talk about your research interests. Tell your friends and make new ones.
History
In May of 2021, the New Zealand Association of Scientists published a call for review and renewal of the research system. The central government has undertaken a once in a generation review of the Research, Science, and Innovation system. The first step was releasing a green paper in October 2021 called Te Ara Paerangi – Future Pathways. This is an ideas document meant to form the basis of a consultative process and review of the research system. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is conducting this process which is expected to take two to three years. A robust review that can help make the system the best it can be for the most people, by necessity, must include thoughts and input beyond the people and groups MBIE’s processes have historically reached. Te Ara Paerangi Community has been formed to help address this challenge with support from Genomics for Aotearoa New Zealand, volunteers, and philanthropy.
