Records shattering exodus of young Kiwi

‍Every month of 2024 has broken brain drain records as young Kiwis chase better pay and sunnier climes. And nowhere is feeling it more than Wellington.

Every single month this year. A shocking statistic, but not surprising that young, talented Kiwis are heading overseas looking for better prospects. The Reuters article title below cites the economy as the issue, but that is just a reflection of the real story. The coalition government, under Christopher Luxon, has pushed a programme of austerity across the public sector. This is affecting every aspect of life here in Aotearoa. In a country with limited opportunity (partly due to scale) and high costs of living, policy after policy passed under the unprecedented use of urgency, this government has made living here much more difficult for so many people.

They are not done yet. Whatever is to come, there needs to be a coordinated effort to prepare for sorting out this dire mess with evidence based policies as soon as there is the opportunity to implement them.
