Yesterday, I read the article about Dr. Vanisi Prescott in e-Tangata. It is a very moving account of her journey as a Tongan immigrant to become a community focused urgent care doctor and G.P. To me her story serves as a clear reminder that no one's future development potential should be judged through the lens of so called meritocracy at some arbitrary point in life.
Dr. Prescott is able to connect with people and provide the kind of care that works for them. To me this demonstrates the incredible value in supporting measures that increase diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also reminds me that it is absolutely necessary to push back against the kind of racist rhetoric calling for a return to a meritocracy that never really was one in the first place.
